Neuroendocrine differentiation in a large series of genetically-confirmed Ewing’s sarcoma family tumor: Does it provide any diagnostic or prognostic …

2021

Given the potential for neuroendocrine differentiation in Ewing's sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT), we aimed to determine neuroendocrine expression in a large series of genetically-confirmed ESFT and its prognostic significance in clinically-localised neoplasms (n = 176). Slides prepared from tissue microarrays were stained for Insulinoma-associated protein 1 (INSM1), CD56, chromogranin-A and synaptophysin. INSM1 expression was present in 59% of ESFT, while synaptophysin, chromogranin-A and CD56 were expressed in only 13%, 8% and 5% of ESFT, respectively. Histological subtypes were only significantly correlated with INSM1 (p = 0.032) or CD56 (p = 0.016) immunoexpression. Regarding prognosis,…

Dermoscopy of cutaneous smooth muscle neoplasms: a morphological study of 136 cases

2019

BACKGROUND: A variety of cutaneous smooth muscle neoplasms may arise in the skin and are frequently unrecognized by clinicians. There is sparse data relating to the dermoscopy of piloleiomyomas (PL), and nothing has been published about the dermoscopy of angioleiomyomas (AL) and leiomyosarcomas (LS). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the morphological findings of a large series of cutaneous PL, AL and LS under dermoscopic observation, comparing these findings among them. METHODS: Digital dermoscopic images of 136 histopathologically confirmed cases of cutaneous smooth muscle neoplasms (114 PL, 13 AL and 9 LS) collected from 10 Hospitals in Spain, Austria and Italy were evaluated for the presence of d…

The Usefulness of Dermoscopy for the Recognition of Malignant Collision Tumors.

2021

Background: Preoperative diagnosis of malignant collision tumors (MCT) is extremely difficult. The value of dermoscopy to improve the correct detection of these tumors has not been previously studied. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of MCT with and without dermoscopy and to describe the dermoscopic features of a large series of MCT. Methods: Dermoscopic images of 161 MCT were evaluated. Clinical and dermoscopic images of histopathologically proven MCT intermingled with other tumors were randomly presented to clinicians with different levels of experience, blinded to the diagnosis and objective of…

Analysis of Fifty-Six Cochlear Implant Device Failures

2008

Objective: Our aim was to present a failure analysis after cochlear implant revision surgery in a large series of children and adults and to assess the outcome and audiologic performance. Methods: Fifty-six cochlear implant failures that occurred in 422 devices implanted between 1990 and 2007 at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Mainz, Germany, were retrospectively analyzed. The causes of failure were reviewed evaluating the individual history, telemetric and intraoperative findings and manufacturer’s investigation reports. Results: We performed 56 surgical revisions in a series of 422 consec…

Is CD1a involved in antitumour immune responses during carcinogenesis?

2004

Sir, I read with interest the article of Coventry and Morton (2003) that investigated DC infiltration within breast cancers and the association with survival. Interestingly, they found that more patients were alive at the 5-year time point in the group with higher CD1a DC density than the lower CD1a DC group, but this failed to reach statistical significance at the P=0.05 level. In our opinion, the role of CD1 family molecules in antitumour immune responses, and in particular of CD1a, should be more debated, since its expression was recently described not only in monocyte-derived dendritic cells, but also in nonmesenchymal cytotypes, that is, epithelial cells (Ulanova et al, 2000). We recen…

Suppressive Efficacy by a Commercially Available Blue Lens on PPR in 610 Photosensitive Epilepsy Patients

2006

Purpose Photosensitivity can represent a serious problem in epilepsy patients, also because pharmacologic treatment is often ineffective. Nonpharmacologic treatment using blue sunglasses is effective and safe in controlling photosensitivity, but large series of patients have never been studied. Methods This multicenter study was conducted in 12 epilepsy centers in northern, central, southern, and insular Italy. A commercially available lens, named Z1, obtained in a previous trial, was used to test consecutively enrolled pediatric and adult epilepsy patients with photosensitivity. Only type 4 photosensitivity (photoparoxysmal response, PPR) was considered in the study. A standardized method …

Design of a multifunctionalizable BODIPY platform for the facile elaboration of a large series of gold(i)-based optical theranostics.

2018

A simple trifunctional BODIPY platform was designed. The high potential of this platform was validated via the elaboration of twelve optical theranostics. More specifically, we reported on the synthesis, the characterization, the photophysical properties, and the evaluation of the hydrophilicity properties of the different BODIPY derivatives, as well as a theoretical rationalization of the intriguing chemical behavior of some of them. The antiproliferative evaluation and confocal imaging of the different compounds in three human and murine cancer cell lines were performed and analysed, along with the measurement of gold(I) uptake in one cancer cell line via ICP-MS.

Proliferation-, estrogen-, and T-cell-related metagenes to predict outcome after adjuvant/neoadjuvant chemotherapy for operable breast cancer in the …

2013

1014 Background: Predicting recurrence in operable breast cancer (BC) despite optimal chemotherapy would be relevant to new drug development and tailored treatments. Methods: A large series (n=3,154) of public Affymetrix gene-expression profiles (GEP) was used to define prognostic/predictive metagenes in different BC subtypes. In ER+/HER2- a proliferation and an ER-related metagene were combined to predict low, intermediate and high risk of recurrence. In TN and in HER2+ a T cell metagene was used to predict low, intermediate and high risk (higher expression associated with lower risk). The metagenes were validated in patients enrolled in the phase III ECTO trial (Gianni L. JCO 2009) and t…

Latent class identification in wheezing preschool children

2016

Background and aim Since the forced oscillation technique (FOT) has not been used in previous studies on wheezing phenotyping in preschool children, we applied FOT in a large series of outpatients visited at IBIM. Methods We analyzed 256 consecutively enrolled ≤5 years children with doctor diagnosis of wheezing. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was performed considering the following personal characteristics: type, cause, recurrence in last 12 months, respiratory resistance (Avr_R(8)), atopy, history of eczema, rhinitis and upper airways infections. High resistance is defined as positive residual of regression on sex, age, height and weight. Risk factors were considered meaningful when they yiel…

Reflux reactions for chromatography

1976

Reactions under pressure are mainly used to prepare derivatives before chromatographic analysis because of the lack of microequipment. A ml-refluxer has been designed to allow reactions under atmospheric pressure for volumes from 0.2 to 5 cm3. The reaction temperature is determined by the boiling point of the solvent thus derivatives of heat sensitive compounds can be made in the micro scale. With the aid of the ml-refluxer large series of derivatisations can be carried out and hence the reaction parameters can be optimized. This is shown at the example of the alkylation of barbituric acids for gas chromatography, where thus only N,N′-derivatives were obtained. The reliability of the appara…
